Epidemiological profile of patients undergoing knee arthroplasty from the physiotherapy service of a public hospital in Santo André-SP

Abstract

Introduction: Knee arthroplasty is indicated for severe disability due to pain, deformity and limited function as a result of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteonecrosis, and other inflammatory arthritis. Objective: To describe the epidemiological profile of patients who underwent knee arthroplasty from the physiotherapy service from the Hospital Estadual Mário Covas (HEMC) in Santo André-SP. Methods: Retrospective study based on a survey of the records from knee arthroplasty surgery patients between January 2007 and December 2009 and underwent rehabilitation at the physiotherapy sector of the HEMC. Results: The average age was 69.1 years, prevailing females in 56.7% of cases. In all medical records, the etiology was gonarthrosis and the type of surgery performed was total knee arthroplasty, being 89.1% unilateral surgeries. Among the comorbidities, the systemic arterial hypertension showed prevalence in 81.08% of cases; in postoperative period 67.5% of cases had no complications. The average rehabilitation physical therapy was of 2.6 months, 72.9% of cases were discharged from hospital due to the achieved goals. The analysis revealed that the patients came from five different cities. Conclusion: Comparing the results with recently published papers, mostly it was found similarity among data.
